Differences between (Data Services) BODS 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2

Can someone help me with a document or something that could help me understand in depth differences between different versions of SAP Integrating tool BODS (4.0, 4.1, 4.2).
As of now I am using v4.0 in my firm. We plan to migrate to v4.2 soon. So wish to understand what are the challenges that we may face. If some in-depth info (or list of differences to whatever extent) is achieved we can relate with current and plan efficiently !

Would be much Thankful ! Thanks in advance

Here it goes…

There is not really a comparison, however we can make the decision by reading ā€œWhat’s Newā€ Documentation

4.2 - http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/sbods42/en/ds_42_whats_new_en.pdf
4.1 - http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/sboDS41/en/sbo411_ds_whats_new_en.pdf
4.0 - http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/boexir4/en/sbo401_ds_whats_new_en.pdf

That’s informative  i had just the ā€˜What’s new with v4.2 earlier’.
But its actually difficult to analyse the challenges we may face while and after migrating from 4.0 to 4.2 :hb:

Has someone experienced the migration from 4.0 to 4.1 ?

FYI, 4.2 isn’t released yet…It is just in Ramp-Up!

So definitely, not many customers have experienced 4.2 One great benefit I know for 4.2 I assume would be, that they have brought the transforms to Workbench! (not all transforms though)

They have taken some Objects migration process to Management Console…the list keeps going on

Also, you should keep in mind that ETL products serves a whole lot of DBMS…So the good and bad primarily depends on what DBMS you are working with…Some versions are more stablized for some DBMS but not for others…So you should be more specific…

I would say, you should list down your must have’s and nice to have’s…and see how it has been improved in the new version…and not thinking on a very broader picture

Also, migration is as easy as a piece of cake or as difficult it would go for couple of days/weeks/months! It all depends on what you have in current place!

Does that makes some eye opener for you?

Hey  Thanks for your response!!
I am aware that v4.2 is not released yet. But we plan to migrate as soon as it releases. I know that new version comes with advancements but I am more concerned about the challenges that my existing interfaces may face if I migrate from v4.0 to v4.2.
Ā• We currently use SAP HANA, SAP BW/ECC, Oracle and Teradata.
Ā• Below are the questions that I am seeking answers to :-
What will be the benefits of the 4.2?
Are we expecting to save time in development, test, run? Better performance? We faced challenges with v4.0 (SAP HANA based interfaces).

Last migration from v3.x to v4.0 was not a piece of cake as i hear from old folks in my project :box:

Kindly advice !

Thanks

The biggest benefit I see so far in 4.2 is the additional functionality in the map operation. The Table Comparison also has added filter functionality but I’m not sure if that was a 4.1 or 4.2 feature.

4.1 introduced the ability to filter the Table Comparison target so I think that’s not new in 4.2 but perhaps enhanced - I have not checked out the 4.2 document.

However, these versions are not ā€œala cartā€ options. 4.0 is going to be out of maintenance soon and once 4.2 is released, you can pretty much assume that 4.1 will end on life support as well … Probably get a few more service packs if lucky but SAP is not going to maintain older versions for the sake of it. Once 4.2 has been released, that will be the portfolio Data Services offering - everything else will be legacy.

So if you are a green fields customer that has no Data Services yet, then going with the latest available version is probably the best place to start. Having said that, 4.2 is a new build release so perhaps waiting for the first Service Pack may not be a bad thing at all. As 4.2 is not generally available yet - you may want to factor this into your timelines.

Data Services 4.1 is pretty mature, I have had less problems with it than with the early 4.0 releases to be honest, so if you need to get your project started today, then I would recommend to implement 4.1 and factor in an upgrade to 4.2 at a later stage - when both product and project maturity make this a sensible move.

Dear Erik,

Could you please brief what issues did you face while migrating from 3.x to 4.0 version?

Thank you,

Hi Deepak - there is good information provided by some experts which is definitely useful. I am currently working on an integration project which uses BODS v3.2 but would be great if someone can share comparisons as well as migration challenges for our readers. Cheers !! :+1:
