Difference between Drills and Slicing and Dicing

Hi,

Can someone help me out with the concept of Drills and Slicing and Dicing. As far as I know,
Slicing is cutting the cube horizintally. example: Data that was available for viewing with year can be viewed with month dimension and vice versa.
Drill down/up: Viewing data on detail/summary level.
Then what is the difference between Slicing and Drill down/up? Please explain with an example.
Dicing is cutting the cube vertically. I don’t fully understand this concept. Can somebody please explain with an example.
Also, drill through is When you need to get additional detail data from the Database or from any other report. But when we create hyperlink on values of a particular column, it also does the same job.
Then what is the difference between Drill though and Hyperlink? Please explain with an example.
Also it would be great if someone can provide an example of Drill Across…

Thanks a lot…!!

Hi,

Slice and Dice option is available in Deski. Using Slice and Dice you can perform operation like Change the table into a Cross tab, Vertical or Horizontal table…Apply breaks, sort, section, rank etc.

Drill up and down: Using the Drill feature, you can drill down and see the data as per the objects that are placed below in a hierarchy and drill back up. Ex: Year → Qtr- > Month → Date or Country → State → City and vice versa.

Drill Across: You can drill across different classes. Ex: Year → Country → State… etc

Using Hyperlink, you will be able to open another report which can be a Detail report which has detail level data about a particular dimension. Suppose the master report has Only State names and there is a detail report which has detail data about states, you can create a hyperlink such that when you click on a state in the master report, a detail report will open up which will show the data for the state you clicked on.

To know in detail about Hyperlink or Open Doc:
Check my 2nd response in the following post…

For testing, create 2 reports in InfoView with Efashion Universe :

  1. Master report with just State and Sales Revenue
  2. Detail report with Year, State, City, Lines, Sales Revenue with a prompt on State.

Then follow what I said in the link posted.

Let me know if this helps.
