Delete multiple variables

I am building a new webi report from an already existing similar report to save time which has lot of variables (approx 200) which I want to delete in the new report. Is there a way to do delete all variables at once rather than 1 at a time in webi. It will delete only 1 variable even though I select multiple variables.

Thanks,
Maddy

I am sorry but I think that only 1 variable can be deleted at a time in a WebI report.

Thanks Marek for the confirmation. I think we should have this feature in webi to make the development easy as most of the times we don’t build complicated reports from scratch.

Thanks,

Roger that. Its very difficult to delete variables one by one.

I know that this is a really old post but I thought I would add some GREAT news in this area…

In WEBI 4.1 SP 4.

You CAN delete multiple variables at the SAME time …

It is FANTASTIC …

Yes I am VERY excited especially as I reuse heaps of my own reports…

Make sure you have your preferences for editing your Webi documents set to Rich Client, and don’t double click to open the document you want to edit - right mouse click and hit Modify.

Your computer will then open up the document in Jave . Rich Client and in the right hand column where you can see your variables as long as you are in design view … you can hold down crtl and click the variables you want to delete or click on one variable and hold down crtl and click on a variable higher up and it highlights all of them in between…

This is FANTASTIC…

Just be careful though… if any of the variables is a dependent for another variable it wont let you delete it and will not delete any of the variable you have selected in that single operation…

HAPPY DELETING

Do you get warnings if any of the variables that you are about to delete are being used in the report?

In 4.1 SP3 in Webi applet interface (java) it’s possible to select and delete multiple variables.

However:

  1. you don’t get a warning if a variable is used in a report.
  2. if one of the selected variables is used in another variable, regardless of the fact if you’ve selected that other variable to be deleted as well, all selected variables won’t be deleted.

But wasn’t this possible in earlier versions? (can’t remember)

Dangerous!

Indeed and the worst bit is I believe it used to warn you that it was used in 3x…!!

I got a crytic warning when I tried to delete a created variable that was used in the report …
I got a pop up that said

Are you sure you want to delete the variable -
and no matter how many time I pressed yes it would not work and I finally had to press no and then I realised I used that variable in the report…

And yes it does not let you delete any variable that another variable needs to run… which is annoying because you have to remember the way you write your dependent variables.

This is Webi 4.1 SP 4 Patch 6 ( I have been told)

Another word of warning…

I don’t know if it works the same in Webi as Deski, but in the latter it only used to check for variable usage in the selected report (i.e. tab) and not the entire document. So, you could have ‘Tab 1’ open and merrily delete 10 variables, only to later find that they were needed in ‘Tab 2’. This is how it used to work; I don’t know if it has changed.

When I have seen this feature “working”, I have never relied on it.

I found it just didn’t work all the time, although that could be because of the behaviour Anorak just described.
Would love the ability to click on a variable and for it to show me all dependencies. Could go further than variables and show if used for page / table filters etc.

Obviously we all wish our reports did not have to be so damn complicated in the 1st place :cuss: .
Unfortunately there can be many challenges in trying to “fix” this and it can take a long time.
