Is it possible to install Dashboard Design 4.0 (or Xcelcius 4.0?) separately, together with BO XI 3.2, which is already installed?
Will these two run together, or do I have to upgrade to BO 4.0 as well?

you’ve probably found your answer since then, but it may be interesting for others as well: the answer is “Yes and No”.
Yes, because you can open older xlf files (they will work fine), create new files and base them on QaaWS from your BO XI 3.x. So it you want to use Dashboard Design 4.0 exactly as you used Xcelsius 2008, then you won’t have any problem (But don’t expect to be able to open your 4.0 files with Xcelsius 2008).
No, because you cannot use the Query Browser (the ability to do queries directly on a universe rather than through QaaWS) with BO XI 3.x. If you try, you’ll get the error message “Access denied. You cannot log on to an older version of the CMS.”.
And once you remove this Query Browser as other related features, Dashboard Design 4.0 is (in my understanding) not very different from Xcelsius 2008. So if you’re already in this situation (DD 4.0 + BO XI 3.x), it will work fine, but it’s probably not worth upgrading Xcelsius alone.
