Crystal Reports

Hi - Does any one have any experience with Crystal Reports? I’d like some information about how to position BO with Crystal Reports at my organization. Thank you!

The way we have it positioned as:

For Crystal Reports

  1. Used to print information on predefined forms.
  2. Need to include predefined reports in a CS application. This will be come obsolete once BO 5.0 comes out since it will have an ActiveX control that will allow for this to be done with BO.

Everything else we use WebIntelligence (1st) and Business Objects (2nd) for doing reporting.

Hope this helps…

Hi Lisa,
I have experience with both Crystal and Bus Obj. There are two very different
reasons to use each tool. For example, Crystal is great for generating standard
reports. There is little or no opportunity to manipulate these as they are mostly

for month end or week end reporting.
Bus Obj is great for putting the ultimate power in the hands of the end user.
While Bus Obj can be used for week or month reporting, using Doc Agent is weaker
then crystal Info’s scheduler. I know that the version 5 release of Bus Obj
promises to greatly improve the “Doc Agent”
If there is any information that I can give you in addition to this (I know a
great deal about both tools) please email me at laurenf@bellatlantic.net and I
will gladly give you more info.

Hi all,

Is there any way to easily (without recreating) convert Crystal Reports into BO Reports?

Cheers

Martin

Could you just pull the SQL from Crystal, and create free-hand sql reports? Even if this only works for some of the simpler reports its going to reduce 800
to a (more) manageable figure.

cheers, Nick

Hi Marty,

I have the same problem here: converting about 800 reports from Crystal into BusinessObjects…

I will also be going through this in the next few weeks - so any advice would be hugely appreciated!

If you are just going to use the same SQL, I don’t see a reason for conversion. The best way out is to design your universe based on the existing reports. I don’t see any easy way out. We are in the process of converting
SQR Procedure reports to BO. We have divided our report onto 3 diff categories and are
designing 3 types of universes(with diff connection parameters) .We have 3 diff reports category which uses diff data sources(diff databases sitting on diff
servers, but almost identical tables). We are in the process of designing a single report and then
going to use VBA Macro to change the universe on which report can be run.

Think in this line.

No chance, there is alot of grouping and local computation done in the reports, the structure should somehow be preserved. What I can imagine is to use the “textual” representation (don’t know the exact name for this) an to create BO reports by VB scripts…
So, if anybody out there has already done something similar, let me share your knowledge.

Looks like now is a good time to evaluate which reports you really need, then hire a consultant to help you rewrite what’s left

Well, when I had to convert our 183 Crystal reports I found that when I was done (2 weeks later) that I only had 64 BO reports because I was able to consolidate based on similar data providers. I don’t see how else you can get around this issue unfortuneately
