CR 1,2,... instead of 01/01/2012, 01/02/2012,... in a graph

We have a graph of total grouped by dates on the x axis. We want to show instead of a counter record date for each date. That is 1,2,3,4, …
instead of 01/01/2012, 01/02/2012, 01/03/2012, 01/04/2012. I tried to create using the total accumulated a distinct count by date (evaluating the change group date). This way I get the counter. But then I run into the problem that the total field I can not add to the chart as a range of values
the x axis.

Anyone know what to do to get that result?
