Confused over check in/out and get latest version

Hi

While using this process between our DEV/TEST/PROD environments I am kind of confused sometimes about how this should work. So say I make a change in my local repo, a change I plan to take right through to Prod.

So to get it into DEV central repo and local dev project area from my own local area:

I make the change in my own repo, I then want to move this to central repo and the local project repo in DEV. While in my own local repo I check out the job in the central repo and then check in with objects and dependants without replacement from my own repo, this stops anyone committing any other changes at the same time.

I then login to the local project repos at DEV level and want to get this change into there. So I open the local pjt repo, link to the central repo for dev. Do I then click on ‘get latest version’ or ‘check out’ then ‘check in’ on the central repo?

The confusing thing for me is to get either of the two options you always have to right click on the version of the central repo so it seems that when you ‘get latest version’ it leads you to think you are taking the version from local to central, which I’m sure it never is.

Is get latest always taking version from central to local?

Next problem is taking it from DEV central to TEST central repo and local project area in TEST. If I login to test local project area do I get latest version from DEV central then check in /out to TEST central?

Hope this makes sense and my description here might notr be right but if you can seewhat I am trying to do, move file from loca dev > Central DEV then > local test > TEST central repo.

Thanks
