Cannot start CMS: "Failed to retrieve cluster name from

Hi.

I’ve installed BOXI R2 (SP2) - with a view to upgrading to SP4. I’m installing on a Win2003 virtual server running under VMWare ESX Server 3.5.0. I have Oracle 10g client installed and am using an Oracle 8 database for my repository and audit db’s.

I have a db user set up with full dba rights, and can access the database without issue using SQLPLUS from the Virtual Server.

After BOXI install, the CMS service won’t start. I looked at the properties and clicked on the Configuration tab and immediately got a message box that read;

"Failed to retrieve cluster name from the database. Reason: Internal error: an unkown exception has occurred"

The Configuration tab tells me the CMS is not part of a cluster, so when I try to change the cluster name and click OK, when I try and start the CMS service it stops almost straightaway. Checking the Configuration tab again and my cluster setting has not been saved. I’ve checked the CMS logfile and it has this in it;

I can’t find any hint of this on BOB or in SAP notes. Anyone, anywhere, any clues? Anything I can try?

This error basically means that the CMS is not correctly connecting to the database.

Are you sure that the Oracle 10g client will connect to an Oracle 8 database? I think that the version mis-match here may be causing a problem.

Update to this thread;

In the Configuration tab of the service properties I pointed the BO installation to an Oracle 10 database and it worked first time.

Hence, I can only assume that Oracle 10 Client on the server is not compatible with the Oracle 8 database on my server box.

Interesting - I wonder what functionality in the repository creation process doesn’t work in Oracle 8… Has anyone captured the script that is executed to create the tables etc?
