BusinessQuery/SPSS record limits

Guys,

My take on this is that it is an Excel problem. SPSS is not normally subject to a record limit, but the mode of linking with Business Objects (not sure what Business Query is) may require some study. I use SAS, which is quite comparable with SPSS in exporting functionality, and am only limited by my system resources (server or harddrive space and RAM).

Actually, Business Query is not subject to the limitation. Excel is. If you are using BQ with SPSS, the question is: Is SPSS subject to a 65,000 row limitation. Unfortunately, I don’t know. If SPSS is really generating Excel files and reading from those, then I think you know your answer.

We were looking at using BusinessQuery to function as an interface between SPSS and BO. However, is BusinessQuery subject to the Excel row limitations? 65000 (approx) rows would not be a large return set.

It’s not really an Excel “problem”, it’s the way it was written. Spreadsheets with that many (or more) values get a bit hard to handle. If you need that many values, then you probably should consider using a database engine instead. That puts you back into the BusinessObjects camp instead of BusinessQuery.

Since BusinessQuery lives “inside” of Excel as an add-in, it inherits the limit on the number of rows allowed by Excel. Hey, only a few years ago the limit was 16,000 rows!

On the other hand, I have not worked with SPSS at all, so I can’t comment on that.
