Business Objects Version XI

Hello

I am curious to know the features that are provided by “Business Objects XI”…as i would be working on migration project to BO XI

Things that i am looking for are as follows:

1)Did any new modules got added up in BO XI product suite?
2)What differentiates(major changes) BO XI from other versions?
3)Howz the configuration setup of BO XI?

Would appreciate if you could also forward the BO XI documents that you posses…

Thanks

You can’t really compare it to anything that previously existed. XI is essentially Crystal plus Webi. Conventional thinking is that very few existing BusinessObjects customers will migrate to XI. If your BusinessObjects shop is 100% Webi, then you may want to consider XI. If you use full client / ZABO, then you will want to wait for v12, because XI has no full client / ZABO included at all.

Thanks for the information…to take this discussion further, as you suggested that there is no fulclient/ZABO in BO XI…are the functionalities of fulclient/ZABO being provided thru Crystal??

If yes, how does Crystal features differ from fullclient

NOOOOOOOOO!!!

You can’t compare BO client and Crystal. It’s simply a very different product. If you are a classic BO customer with full-client/ZABO use, you can’t use XI. It won’t refresh (not even sure it will display) your reports. There is no way to convert the reports. BO has told us via their roadmap, that XI is intended for Crystal customers and BO customers who use ONLY WebI.

The combined product line for BOTH sets of customers (BO and Crystal) will be BO 12.

What is the expected time(month) of availability of BO 12 as per Business Objects?

They say December 2005. That seems aggressive to me. My guess is that the controlled release will be Q4 and the general release will be Q1.

But, it’s all based on testing.

I heard from someone that so as to upgrade to BO XI one should be already running on BO 6.5

So does that mean that i have to upgrade to BO 6.5 first (as we are currently having BO 5.1.6) and then to BO XI

Thanks

Get hold of the integration roadmap. There is a diagram showing the different product threads coming together in version 12. You can upgrade from 6.5 to XI but the majority of people who go to XI will be Crystal 10 customers or brand new customers. Full Client BO 6.5 shops will go from 6.5.1 optionally via 6.6 directly to 12.

In my reading of the XI Installation Guide, it states that any 6.X repository will be upgraded to 6.5, then to XI automatically.

Also all .rep’s will be converted to .wid (webIntelligence) reports.
Does anyone know if there is synchrnization of data providers i Webi XI?
I have many full client reorts that would not work otherwise.

Thanks for any info.

Sorry, but I have to chime in again.

No BO customer with full-client reports should be considering XI. It is still WebI with all it’s limitations. No, it cannot synchronize DPs. That won’t be out until 6.6 this summer. Yes, it tries to convert reps to wids, but most of them will fail.

XI is simply not intended for you if you have full-client reports.

Hi all,

For me that is the main difference with BO XI is that BO doc won’t be stored in repo anymore. They will only stored on directories.

In BO XII the use of mysql will be probably widespread.

Regards

It is spelled out in Business Objects’ official roadmap here. I do encourage everyone concerned about functionality, upgrade paths, and timelines to read this roadmap

Business Objects ver 12 is (optimistically) slated for Q4 of 2005 - keep in mind that Business Objects so far has been able to meet their announced dates more or less.

If you read the roadmap, the confusion is understandable:

  • The diagram alone is misleading

  • You have to read the verbiage on Page 14 very carefully to distinguish between “Businessobjects inc” and “businessobjects legacy products vs. Crystal”.

We’re a Crystal Enterprise 10 (plus Reports as designer) and BO 6.1 (FC mostly, some Webi) shop. My question is should I bother to upgrade our separate Crystal 10 environment to standalone XI, or just hold off until 12 and unify the whole thing at that time?..

What do you base that on?

Nick Daniels :uk: (BOB member since 2002-08-15)

My understanding is that XI is primarily for CE (Crystal Enterprise) users, not for CR (Crystal Reports) users. So the answer depends on which Crsytal you are using.

So is there going to be a new XI forum?? I believe it has been released to the general public now, no? I feel bad posting my questions to the V6 forum…but if moderators have no problem with it than I will continue. Since it is so new, I think it would be a great place for people that are on the fence to go and see some of the problems so that they can make a more informed decision before getting knee deep in it.
