Business Objects online Admin and Migration Training courses

Hello,

Has anyone taken any of the Business Objects online or web-based courses for XI Server Admin or XI Migration? Any opinions on whether they were helpful and in what respect would be appreciated.

My story is I’ve been working in BusinessObjects since version 4.x as an Administrator, Designer and Report Developer, and have been through migrations for every major release through 6.5b SP2. Now I’m looking for detailed info to assist with scoping our 6.5 SP2 to XI R2 migration for a small’ish implementation of approximately 100 Webi/InfoView users and 25 Deski users on single-node application server. I’m thinking the online course for “Migrating BusinessObjects 5x & 6x to BusinessObjects XI R2” would be helpful, but am hoping I can hear from anyone who has actually taken this or any BO web-based Admin course.

Any thoughts? Did you like it? Was the format acceptable? Was the content comprehensive and thorough or more geared towards beginner Admins?

Thanks,
-Laila

I would recommend the instructor led classes, you get a manual (which you will not get with online courses as far as I am aware) and be able to talk with the other students and the instructor.

Hi Andreas,

Thanks for the info. I was not aware of the manual (or lack thereof) for the online format.

I agree, having access to an instructor and taking a class with other BO professionals and peers would provide a better overall training experience; an experience that’s nearly impossible with an online course.

Probably the best type of knowledge I’d hope to gain in an online courses are best practices and guidelines using case studies. Would anyone have any feedback as to the BO online course approach? Is it a series of “How To” quiz-oriented computer based training modules? Or do the classes present any decent, real-world applicable guidelines?

Thanks,
-Laila

The web course for 5x/6x to XI migration was pretty good. It takes quite a bit of time to finish, I think they said 16 hours, but i did it in 8. Its geared mostly to a beginning to intermediate level but gives enough info for you to have a thorough understanding on migration and the differences between the versions. Each section has an interactive piece where you do an activity that was discussed so you get more of a hands on training.

But if you can get an instructional class, thats always the best option.

In my humble opinion, the on-line classes are waste of time and money. You should take the instructor-led classes. Depending on how you drafted your contract, you usually can get some training credits.

I agree 100% - BOBJ classroom courses are the way to go.

The biggest problem is finding some location/dates where these specific BOBJ classroom courses will actually have enough participants to run…they seem to need a minimum of 4 people for the public-courses.
