Business objects licensing clarification

Hello,
Appreciate if anyone can give their thoughts on my issue…

We are currently licensed as below for BOXI 3.1:
4 CPU Business Objects Enterprise Premium
4 CPU Business Objects WEBI

When we were having licensing discussions prior to the upgrade to BI 4.1, SAP sales tried a lot to move us to the Named user/Concurrent User license model, which would not be suitable for our environment considering the fact that our number of business objects users keep on adding frequently. That is why we wanted to retain with the CPU model where we can have unlimited users. Since we did not move to NUL/CUL model, SAP sales is pushing for one more CPU saying, if you have 5 CPU BOE Premium, then you would have virtualization rights. Otherwise, no virtualization rights with 4 CPU BOE Premium. Our Organization is almost transitioned to virtualization environment of their servers. There were lot of other things that sales team said (for example, add one more WEBI CPU as you need to have 5 CPU WEBI if you are going with 5 CPU BOE Premium), but when we countered they have taken back and said it is okay to have 4 CPU WEBI and 5 CPU BOE premium. So my question is if we are grandfathered by the licensing contracts earlier to 2008, so after 2008, do we MUST have 5 CPU BOE premium to get virtualization rights? Can’t we have 4 CPU BOE Premium with virtualizations rights?

This something you will have to negotiate.
All licensing deals are different , so I doubt anyone will be able to help you with this.

I agree with Mak 1. There may be better deals these days by going through a third party BO consultancy/reseller.

Thanks Mak 1 and Mark! Appreciate your responses.

Yes the negotiations are still in progress and hopefully we would be able to settle on something that is feasible.

We reviewed all our licensing contracts in details and nowhere it says that we cannot have virtualization with 4 CPU BOE Premium. SAP says after 2008, this new rule as come into existence for all. They were saying either have NUL/CUL to get virtualization rights or add one more CPU (in CPU model) for virtualization rights. So wondering how did they even come up with that 5 CPU rule for virtualization and I’ll ask for the supporting documentation that says so.

I would check with a 3rd party.

Ive installed many a 4 CPU license key on virtual......doesnt sound like a familiar rule to me.

I feel your pain. We had the same issues and ended up with much less for much more money.
