Hi,
I downloaded and installed Business Objects Edge Series Free Trial from businessobjects.com with MySql database with Windows XP Professional. I see the installation was successful. This is first time I am planning to use Business Objects with Vision instance. At the time of creation it asked me to enter password for two accounts 1. User ‘root’ for which password I entered was ‘apps’ 2. User ‘Business Objects’ for which I entered password ‘apps’.
In my all programs list I see Business Objects → Business Objects Crstal Decisions where I see the following programs were installed
Central configuration Manager
Datasource Migration Wizard
Designer
Import Wizard
Java Administration Launchpad
Java Infoview
Publishing Wizard
Registration Wizard
Repository Migration Wizard
Universe Builder
and Tomcat configuration.
When I checked Central Configuration Manager, I see Central Management Server is running, so I think the installation was successful. I see crystal reports servers are running.
I did not see Business Objects Desktop or crystal reports tool. Which tool among the above is good for me to start creating some reports. For any tool I use I see the passwords I created above are not working, it says user not existing or some errors similar to this. I have time limit and cannot go through extensive documentation.
please tell me how to configure this to start building reports. What are the main steps involved to create users to use above tools and start developing reports.
Thanks Niranjan for response. Yes, CMS is up and running. MySQL database was installed with Business Objects. I checked in Windows Task manager, the process mysqld.exe is running.
In the above list which tool I can use to build reports. Is it Designer, Java Infoview or Universi Builder. I am new to it please advise.
Hi Niranjan,
When I tried to login using Designer tool it asks for following fields:
System: ( what is this, I am using it first time so plese tell me what I need to fill in this field.
User Name: I am using mysql database user id
Password: I am using mysql database password
Authentication: It shows default as ‘Enterprise’, the other options that can be selected from list box are LDAP, Standalone ( No CMS ), Windows NT, Windows AD.
Please give me brief description of the procedure to build Business Objects reports. For Ex. For Discoverer we use Discoverer Desktop or Discoverer plus to create a workbook on folders created in Discoverer Administrator ( these folders are created from database tables or views and joined in Administrator through joins ). Do we have to do anything like that in Business Ojbects.
System is the CMS name. Check the system name used when logging on to CMC or InfoView
2 & 3. Log in with a user from the BO system (administrator is by default set up with no password)

Hi Niranjan and Josh,
I just figured out the system name is my computer name/host name on which CMS was installed. But still I could not figure out the user name and password. When I checked the properties of CMS as shown in Central Configuration Manager. It shows the user name as LocalSystem but the password field only shows as *****. When I leave password field as blank it shows the error message as invalid user/login credentials are not correct.
When Business Objects XI Release 2 ( trial version ) is installed, what are the user login credentials created automatically. As far as I remember I did not gave a user/password during installation. I only created MySql database passwords for users root and Business Objects.
Please anybody help me in getting the login details for Business Desktop Intelligence tool soon after initial installation.
Hi Josh,
Thanks, I am able to login to Designer using the administrator user the way you gave in your post. Its opening a wizard to create a universe. I dont know what that is and I dont have manuals or time to go through the material. Please give me a quick review and main steps to create reports of enterprise standards, I think they publish the reports to servers or web.
Hi Josh,
i could create universe. It seems its just loading the database tables as classes ( Just like in ADF/JDeveloper ) together with database joins. It shows all the tables as a diagram. Seems I defined the database tables as universe in Business Objects.
How can I start creating reports from here. Please advise.
sounds like you really should at least read some manuals on how to create universes and reports, and maybe even attend some instructor lead classes because there is a lot more to this than just adding all fields to the universe designer and start creating reports
Not to say that you can’t learn by yourself but you will do yourself a big favour by at least reading some books / manuals to get an understanding on how to do this
