Business Objects and SAP BW

Hi Folks,
Would anyone happen to know of a similar site to this one with posts about SAP BW and Business Objects?
There seem to be a lot of SAP questions being posed here but no one able to answer them (SAP is pretty strange after all).
I was just wondering if others are making use of a resource that I could too (and then return of course and answer SAP and BO questions here  ).
Alternatively, if anyone happens to know of any sites at all that talk about SAP BW and BO I’d love to know what they are. I can’t seem to find anything beyond BO’s site advertising its own SAP BW capabilities.
Thanks,
BatCat

These guys … http://claraview.com/?p=sap_bi … are the most knowledgeable I’ve seen, even though I certainly haven’t made an exhaustive search. Yes, they are a consulting firm, but you might be able to get some general information from them.

Thanks Dwayne!
I’ll have a look around their site.

We are using SAP R/3 BW, well at least we will be using it as our source system and DB/DW.

We have been testing XIR2 and connections to SAP have been very problematic. The SAP integration kit is half-baked, and after several exhaustive tests we continue to get more information between the lines from BO consultants.

There are several key issues:

  1. Level names in SAP cubes and queries are displayed as codes, which defeats the purpose of enabling the user to build their own reports. I have not had any confirmation if the MHF addresses this issue.

  2. You cannot create any further objects in a universe. In other words, you cannot create prompt objects or further aggregation. You can only put the universe on top of the BW Query or cube and use it as is.

  3. 2 means that you have to ‘realign’ your reporting strategy. The words we keep hearing from BO SAP gurus is that you need to develop BW Queries and Cubes for very specific reporting needs. So you’ll need to become very involved in SAP BW devleopment, not a bad thing for the CV.

I would like to keep this thread alive and exchange information with other BW users.

Thanks for the info, ghostman.

I posted a subject a while ago regarding the SAP integration kits but got no replies. Haven’t been able to speak with anyone that is really using them, as we were considering them. Sounds like you know the reason why there aren’t many people using them. :frowning:

Hi Folks,
I’m finding it very frustrating.
There’s precious little information on the practical aspects of Business Objects and SAP BW queries on the internet, no real documentation and my company won’t provide me with SAP BW training as it’s expensive. :hb: :hb: :hb:
The error messages that come back from Business Objects include words like ‘Catastrophic Failure’. :cuss:
I’ve just reached the end of the line with a project and if I don’t get a successful outcome from a recent email I’m going to tell my manager the POC will be failure unless they give me some help.
:wah: :wah:
Sorry folks, just needed to vent.

Hi,

http://sapfans.com/forums/ is a site lik this one, but for SAP products (like SAP-BW) but has nothing to do with BO.

Bo has a tool called BW-Universe builder witch will build automaticaly a universe from a BW-cube. Not perfect but good as starting point.

You can also use strategies to inport sap-tables with logical names instead of technical names.

we have managed to do a work around using SAP B/W integrating to BO.
However we used tables generated by BW as source instead.

Has anyone been successful in implementing XIR2 Webi (with SAP Kit) on either a BW3.5 or BW7 environment?

For those of you that can answer yes to above, I would be really interested to hear your war stories, in particular…

  • What %age split of Navigable vs Display did you settle on?
  • How many attributes did your largest characteristic contain?
  • What was the largest (rows) cube you worked with?
  • What compromises to your design/user adoption etc did you have to make to get the two products (Webi and BW) to work together?
  • What things would you avoid or do differently next time?

Thanks
