Potentially easy question: what is your favorite method for doing calculations that take input/ output contexts into consideration?
Say I have a report with Dimensions A, B, and C and Measure 1. Now, I want to make a section out of Dimension A, put a break on dimension B, and then calculate the percentage share of each.
Before using Desktop Intelligence I would set up the sums I wanted to use for Dimension A and B then mouse over the formula in the formula bar to see the context in the tooltip. Once it had already created the input and output contexts for me, I would just divide by that and be done with it.
Is there an equivalent trick to show contexts in WebI XI? I have taken to putting all my calculations in first then doing the formatting / breaks, but I would like the flexibility to work either way.
Having used full client for over 10 years, I’m looking at WebI for the first time. A favourite trick in full client when you want to force the context of a calculation is to define a variable and select ‘Evaluate the formula in its context’. You can then use the formula in independent cells outside of the block, and this method ensures that the syntax is correct.
It’s a very useful tool and I will sorely miss it if it’s not available in WebI. Is there a similar method in WebI?
We don’t seem to have the same “Evaluate in its context” option in Webi, unfortunately. If you are very familiar with the report calculation context options in full client you will find that they are nearly the same, other than some of the syntax. For example, webi uses square brackets [ ] around variable names rather than angle brackets < > that full client uses.
It would be nice to see that option added to webi.
I am also wondering about this convenient feature which displays the default calculation context. I am going from 6.1b to XI R3 SP2. I am looking around for this option in XI but don’t see it. Does anybody know if it is available?
