I’ve searched the forum but not yet found a solution.
We have recently migrated from BO 6.0 to BO-XI, and everything seems to be going according to plan.
I have noted however that the scheduled reports that our system is sending out by email cannot be opened by our Blackberry users, whereas the old system reports would open fine.
The only difference I can note is that the new system generates pdf files to “Version 1.5” according to the file properties, compared to “Version 1.2” of the old system.
I appreciate that this problem is as much to do with Blackberry as anything, but in the event that Blackberry are unable to help me, is there any way of altering the version of the pdf generator in Business Objects in order to increase compatability of the files at that level?
As an update to this, I have just had a reply from my network provider (Vodafone), who have given me the following response:
Problem
The BlackBerry device user is unable to view a Portable Document Format (PDF) attachment on the BlackBerry device.
Cause
The PDF file may have been created using PDF Creator Pilot 2.x which is not an Adobe® tool. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server does not support non-Adobe distillers because some of the files they create are not standard.
Resolution
Use an Adobe supported PDF application to create PDF files.
Obviously this is not particularly helpful, unless someone can tell me that there is another way of getting BO-XI to use an official Adobe tool for creating pdfs.
Further investigation revealed that users of the Blackberry 8100 (Pearl) were in fact able to open the pdf reports with no problem, and the problem seemed limited to 8700 and older devices.
For the time being, the report in particular that our 8700 users needed to view I re-formatted into a layout that could be viewed in Excel format, and had it broadcast in that fashion instead, which the 8700 would open ok.
We are now in the process of upgrading our phone handsets as our Vodafone contract is being renewed, and we are getting rid of the 8700 and replacing them with the new Blackberry Curve model, plus a couple of additional Pearls.
Hopefully, that will do the trick.
But it doesn’t really get over the fact that there is some kind of pdf incompatibility that Blackberry don’t support across their entire range.
