BO 6.5 and Linux

Does anyone know if BO 6.5 is supported to run on a Linux server as promised at the User Conference? If not, what version will be supported for Linux? When does it come out? How do I become a beta tester? Any information is appreciated.

At the Partner Summit I was told that Linux would not be supported in 6.5 although it will in BO 11. They didn’t give me any other info on Linux support for 6.x so that may still be a possibility.

I heard the same thing. But, unfortunately, BO 11 is not intended for BO users. It’s for Crystal users. BO users will only benefit from BO 11 if they are not using full-client.

So does this mean that there really aren’t any plans at this time to support Linux or it is just not known which version will support it and when available? When I went to the User Conference in Phoenix last Nov. they stated that v6.5 would support Linux and would be available around 3Q 2004. I even confirmed that later because we have a definite interest in using Linux with Business Objects. I have been using/administering BO since v3.1 and know that they(BO) tend to have delays on releasing software updates, but I don’t even see anything on their website even mentioning Linux.

Appreciate your feedback and if you hear anything further regarding a release for Linux(beta or whatever) please post it. The sooner I can get my hands on it the better.

I think you’re looking at Version 12 before you will get a Linux port that will be useful for existing BO customer. I’ll try to confirm that.

Just keep in mind that the user conference was before the Crystal merger had really taken shape. The product roadmap for the intergrated product line didn’t come out until January, so some of what you heard at the conference may have changed.

I received a call yesterday from a client currently looking at different BI tools. He told me that he had concerns with BO because of the current lack of Linux support. He then said that the BO direct sales rep had told him he would only have to temporarily run a Win 2000 box because Linux support would be available soon.

It didn’t really occur to me to delve into the issue at the time, but now I’m curious as to what sort of timeframe is “soon”.

The answer is NOW! Albeit that this is for Crystal…at least we’re going in the right direction…

Does anyone know what versions of LINUX will be supported?

We will be running LINUX on a z/OS operating system on an IBM mainframe.

Thanks,
Rana Kassel

RedHat AS3 and SuSE is currently supported by Crystal, but that is for the Intel platform… I am not sure about the mainframe.

While installing 6.5 on HP-UX the other day I noticed there are several references to Linux in the install scripts. While it’s definitely not supported yet, and it probably doesn’t even work, it’s definitely in development. Someone may even be able to get it working if they play around with it for a bit.

I suppose it’ll all come together in version 12.
