If you are talking about age/sex standardisation, try the science search engine www.google.com http://www.google.com for the formula (hint: try both the US and UK spellings of standardization/standardisation).
You should get references like http://www.sph.unc.edu/courses/epid168/ http://www.sph.unc.edu/courses/epid168/ which may be of use. A good textbook is probably going to be more helpful though.
I expect to be incorporating direct standardisation into a set of reports I am writing for health related BO universe I am building, some time in the next month or so . If this is likely to be of help, e-mail me directly.
