Advice MSTR vs SAP BO for master thesis topic

Hi Guys,

I am MBA students ,studying in Germany
I am currently writing my master thesis with my company
I am comparing operational concepts for Microstrategy tool and SAP BO tool
however comparison these two tools in details is not enough for thesis as these two tools are vast enough for comparison and i have time limitation of three month.
So,After conversation with my guide i decided to take one aspects of the MSTR and SAP BO for a comparison and explain in details so after little research i thought to compare architecture level of database connectivity in SAP BO it is via universe and MSTR directly from business datawarehouse and understanding how it is implemented within my company by taking cases study and then implementing in my thesis.
important is also not to have any bias comparison in regards to both the tools because each tools have its own pros and cons.
As,I have little knowledge of both the tools i would like to have inputs on my idea and also any further area that you guys think can be differentiating aspects and can be effectively implemented in my master thesis within a time frame is welcome ?

Thanks in advance,

Best Regards,
GrGerman

Obviously biased, but worth a look.

Thanks Mak,

I have already visited these link before but it is more inclined towards MSTR tools.

Try contacting SAP directly, I’m sure they will have something :).

Dear Mak,

Thank you for a reply.
After some research,I finally thought to write the user management/user access problems faced during migration /upgrading of SAP BO reporting tools.
It would be helpful if some one provide me with an input on it?

A lot of Business Objects customers are using SAP BW nowadays as their Data Warehouse solution. BW contains already all authorizations. So my challenge was to keep as much authorizations in SAP BW and use these BW authorizations in BO.

Perhaps I can be of assistance here…
We are/have been (for almost 3 years now) in the midst of converting our Enterprise Reporting Solution from Bobj to Microstrategy.

At the risk of sounding somewhat bias, I feel the decision our Corp made to switch our Enterprise Reporting Platform to something different was definetly the worst decision I’ve ever seen made.
We’ve found MSTR is much more expensive, labor intensive (on almost every level) and complicated to use (for both end-users AND Developers alike).

We hear/get complaints almost every day (from not only our Developers but normal end-users & analysts) about how extremely non-intuitive & un-user friendly MSTR is (compared to Bobj). Even Architects are complaining how much more complicated, time-consuming & painful it is to develop & maintain a MSTR Semantec layer/model (versus creating/supporting a comparative Universe in Bobj).

There seems to also be more daily routine work for Admins to do as well. For example: MSTR does not have a built-in “Active Directory Engine” to dynamically Synchronize/associate Users with their proper User Groups within the MSTR Platform/metadata (like BO does). It only has/uses an LDAP Engine (which does not associate/define Users into their proper User Groups within MSTR’s Metadata). So unless Admins “manually” define/add (within MSTR) EACH USER to all their proper respective Active Directory User Groups, Admins will otherwise have absolutely no idea how a user is defined nor what Active Directory User Groups a user actually belongs to. If BO can/does do it, why can’t MSTR??!!

I think thats probably enough for now, if you need any more rants just let me know… lol
