Scheduling Xcelsius refreshes & distributing

I happened to run across this today:

(We use InfoSol for some of our scheduling needs.)

Has anyone used it in this fashion (with Xcelsius) and can comment on it?

thanks.

Dashboards are not meant for scheduling. They are refresh on open. Hence you dont need to schedule a dashboard.

That looks great.

Non-scheduling of XCelsius is keep us from purchasing it.

As Steve mentioned, there are times when you donā€™t want it to refresh on open. (Remember weā€™re talking about Xcelicus not the ā€œbigā€ Dashboard product from BO.)

If your underlying data only changes once a day, and you deploy an Xcelsius chart to your intranet, thereā€™s no need for it to pound away at your data warehouse and refresh every time.

You can also push a xml-file to a location (on a scheduled basis) that the ā€˜use webserviceā€™ is pointing to. Working this way you can create a xml-file once a day and Xcelsius wonā€™t pull data from your source system again and againā€¦ Cheapest solutions imo.

For your information:

Main Infoburst features coupled with Xcelcius:

  • Infoburst is able to refresh (with schedule) a BO Doc (Deski, Webi,ā€¦) and generate an XML File with data. This XML can be put on a share folder for example. So your Xcelsius can be refreshed with this XML file. It prevents from using WS or developping specific programs. Easy for maintenance.
  • Infoburst is able to publish Xcelsius Dashboard by mail (in attachment, HTML in line), network share (format PPT, PDF, SWF) or Webserver (format HTML in line, PPT, PDF, SWF)

BOBJ in fact has a solution for scheduled refresh of Xcelsius. There is a small executable called BATCH.EXE. It will accept flash file and excel worksheet as parameters and produce new flash file with content from excel. Originaly it was supplied with SRC planning software. However BOBJ is not willing to share it or make it available.

Regarding refresh there is certanly strong point in ability to be able to refresh flash automatically. Many times data is changed only once a month so refreshing it every time it is opened is not really needed. Besides that if it is refreshed automatically you allways have to carry XML files ith you or have connection with server. Real beauty of dashboad is that it is self contained and can be viewed almost anywhere.

Another desirable feature would be the possibility to refresh dashbpoards embedded in PPT. Management allways requests monthly reports in form of PPTā€™s. Embedding Xcelsius into it is nice but you have to manualy refresh and embed it every month or make shure that they have connection to the data source each time they want to view it. Automatic refresh of embedded xcelsius would be really cool.

ā€¦ ā€œA named user or processor license is required to permit users to access, view, or use Connected Presentationā€. A Connected Presentation is defined as a Macromedia Flash application created with the Software (XCelsius) that connects to an external data source.

Essentially the Named User License (NUL) license requirement is the ability for the XCelsius document to connect to a data source and retrieve data (last instance, realtime, XML file, or otherwise).

Being able to schedule the swf file would essentially eliminate the need for a connected presentation and make the entire NUL license meaningless. I could schedule a SWF file every 15 minutes and write the content to a shared location somewhere (so users get new data every 15 minutes) and eliminate the need to purchase any more than a handful of NULā€™s.

There is no revenue stream in BO coming out with a tool to allow XCelsius files to be scheduled. At least with the current licensing model.

BOBJ XCelsius Dashboard bursting requires named user license and should not be free distributed. Contact your account manager. :+1:

oldbobjer (BOB member since 2009-08-10)

that does not at all tie up with the SAP BO site. Report bursting xcelsius is available via the innovation centerā€¦

"Click on Get it Now to start using this technology preview.
Please note that this is a technology preview only and not recommended for use in production environments. "

the problem is it requires batch.exe to run  so if anyone has batch.exe can you send it this way :):)

cheers!

Is it going to work if I embed Xcelsius inside Crystal report and schedule it?

Hi Simona

Could you please share the steps on how to schedule and email a dashboard.

Thanks

rajx72 (BOB member since 2006-08-02)

Hi Raj,

I did achieved this by embedding the flash file in crystal reports and do a bursting for 500 different users.

Regards

Looking for steps to schedule an Xcelsius visualization by embedding it in a Crystal report.

We have an Xcelsius visualization that uses 12 LiveOffice connections to get the latest data from scheduled WebI instances. It takes 45 secs and executives are not happy with it.

I tired embedding the .swf file in a Crystal Report. Even if I schedule the report the flash file still refreshes after opening the Crystal instance.

I have specified an enterprise account in the model file instead of Windows AD authentication. I guess I am missing something.

Please let me know the steps to automate Xcelsius refresh via Crystal.
