Our current hardware is located in a data center that is being shut down. Our choice was to allow them to shut down our server and wait for it to physically be moved to a new data center, or upgrade to a new box. Given that our last server upgrade was several years ago and has been running 24x7 ever since, and given that we didn’t want to put our community through the pain of being offline for a period of time we have opted to upgrade to a new server. This move should be relatively painless, although we will have to shut the board down in order to take a clean back up, and there will be a few hours of time when the DNS is trying to catch up to our move. Last time we did this on Saturday and the board was fully functional within a few hours of requesting the DNS update. We hope the same thing will happen this time.
We have ordered the new server hardware, and it should be provisioned within the next 24 hours. We’ll run a test migration at some point this week. The final migration will be scheduled based on when our current hardware will be retired, and more details will be posted once we know that information.
I have migrated the first domain with a phpBB board attached to the new server. It will run for a few days while we look for errors. If all goes as planned, BOB may move as early as this coming Sunday.
BOB’s move has been scheduled for this coming Saturday afternoon. I anticipate the actual code / data move will take approximately two hours, but the DNS update may take up to 24 hours to propagate. By Sunday morning everything should be up and running on the new server.
As a fallback position we can re-enable BOB on the old box if something goes wrong with the move, but I don’t anticipate that happening.
We moved from a 4-core cpu to an 8-core cpu with faster memory, so yes, the site should be responding quicker. I was waiting to see if anyone would notice.
