New SAP SCN

Has anyone used it? It doesn’t seem as well organized as the old version. I finally found the Java SDK Docs, but still haven’t found code samples.

Truly shocking. It took me two or three attempts to find WebI - I reckon probably 30 minutes. I appreciate they have to cover a lot of areas but sheesh its really poor :blue:

I am not sure if all content from the old SCN was moved to the new one. I was not able to find something the other day that I was pretty sure did exist in the old SCN. :?

I thought it was strange that they have a big “Beta” header but no link to the old site.

Who releases a Beta without leaving the old version available?

The new SCN feels too much like a social media site and the approach to managing content is too “fuzzy”. I believe usage has plummeted as well. Most are attributing this to adoption drop-off/pick-up.

Also, a great deal of blog entries have been butchered in the migration. None of these signs are good and I’m hoping SCN gets back on track somehow.

Exactly that. Its great if you want to read the blog of some random SAP person, which will most likely be titled something like ‘Why I decided to write a blog’…how did they think this was going to be better? And I’ve read all the guff on there about how they’ve got people working on there 24 hours a day taking feedback and making improvements and how lots of people really like the new look…politics, politics, politics - they’ve made a mistake and cos some VP has their head on the block if this is seen as a retrograde step, we all have to play the game and say, what a nice new website you have.

Rubbish.

Hmm, I should really start saying what I think

If you read the messages from customers regarding the new site, at least 90% of them are angry and frustrated and many want the old site back. Maybe 10% like it. So it’s correct to say that “many people like the new site” in the way as “many people like paying high gas prices” is correct. I was rather surprised to see messages from SAP folk saying, quite literally, “it’s here to stay, get used to it.”.

That said, I think the new site has promise, and there are many features that are worthwhile. Following looks pretty cool.

I think SAP would have avoided all the negative criticism if they had just built in redirects from the old pages, and allowed a preview of the new site for a couple of months so we could test it out and provide feedback before it went live.

The new SCN is built with social networking in mind, which is really the way of the future. Of course, human beings are animal of habit. It will take some time for many people to get used to. But I think overall it is a much better site. The old one was just horrible. You can never find anything there without saving all the direct URLs.

If you are looking for discussion forums, you can find the mapping here:
http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-18971

And if you are looking for the tutorials of BI4, go here:
http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-7725

If you have further issues, please let me know and I can post them on the moderator space which is actively monitored. They want the new SCN to be a great success.

People might be complaining at the beginning (as they always do  ), but I can see that people are starting to come back to the new SCN because the traffic on the discussion forums are increasing.

I won’t argue that the old site was bad, Searching in forums was horrendous. I haven’t tried searching in the new site yet to see if it’s any better. I don’t very often participate in those forums (BOB is a far better resource).

My issue was that I was looking for two things that were previously on sdn.sap.com: the Java SDK docs and the sample code. I eventually found both, but neither were in the mapping page, nor could I find them with Search.

As I said above, I think most people would accept the change to the site more graciously if the mapping was more extensive. If you go to a site expecting to find something, and instead discover that nothing is where you expect it, it creates a bad first impression and everything you experience from then on will be tainted. If I can at least get to what I need quickly enough, then spend time exploring the new site, my experience will be much more favorable.

I think the layout should have been:
[:9e2ea3b17e]BLOGS
[
:9e2ea3b17e]FORUMS
[:9e2ea3b17e]CODE EXCHANGE
[
:9e2ea3b17e]NEWS
[:9e2ea3b17e]WIKI
[
:9e2ea3b17e]mySCN
[*:9e2ea3b17e]CONTRIBUTOR CORNER
…with an option to add “Follow…” and based on what you’re tracking, fill up the “mySCN” part of the portal. Code Exchange would maintain documentation and code samples - this could possibly overlay to WIKI items too…something along these lines at least.

In its current state, they should provide a pictorial workflow with key routes, like:

“If you used to follow someone’s blog here…eg [pic of blog link form old SCN] …Now just do this …[image of click-thru steps]”

“If you used to browse the Web Intelligence forums by going here …now just …” etc

This is an interesting video in which Mark Yolton discusses the process and execution of the new SCN:

I understand the challenges of user adoption and empathize with SCN’s current predicament and hope things find re-alignment.

So I’m trying to be open to SCN’s changes, but they’re making it very difficult.

Before SAP, links to Product Documentation from within the various tools would take you directly to the appropriate documentation page. After the move to SAP, the links all dumped to help.sap.com, so you would have to click through “BusinessObjects” to get to the documentation index.

Now, “SAP BusinessObjects” is renamed “Analytics”. So the instructions in WebI help which refer you to “SAP BusinessObjects” are no longer valid.

Yes, there’s a link to a page that maps the old names to new, but it’s in the lower right corner, under a picture of a freeway that take up half of the page.
