Bad Performance FORMATTING Report on New Computer

I just got a new computer with double the memory of my last PC, however I find that formatting reports has a very noticable lag now that did not exist on my old PC. We upgraded from a Dell 620 to a Dell 630, if that helps. Oddly enough, I have not noticed a degredation in refresh times; just the lag in formatting reports.

I am not super-technical, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!!

Hi jdean1012,

I’m not sure that your local client machine will affect performance in this, or similar ways. After all you are working (WebI) from a web-server and using it’s resources (and connection to it). Poor performance may be due to other server activity like increase user demand, or server memory issues.

One option you could try for better performance on your local machine is to toggle the View Structure mode, then make all (or most) of your report updates at one time and then toggle back to view the report. This sequence will send all of your report changes to the web server (and back) once rather than once each time you make a change (as you would otherwise in normal report view mode). This is a bit cumbersome but should reduce the wait time for you in the short run.

I would also be curious to see if you were running a different version of Java on the 2 machines - maybe you’re hitting an issue with your JVM?

Same for the memory settings of the JVM, maybe you’re not taking advantage of the new memory as you could. Just an idea.

Good luck,
Brent

Thanks guys!

Unfortunately, View Structure is where I notice the lag vs. my old PC the most.

I will take a look at the JVM settings tomorrow. Can you give me a quick-and-dirty version of how to look at them?

I just upgraded Java to the most recent version today and can’t really tell that it made a difference.

Thanks!!

Sure - bring up your Java control panel (located in your computer’s Control Panel) and find the Java Applet Runtime Settings - I have 2 lines of settings, the bottom has my memory settings:

-Xmx64m -Xmx256m

I’m not sure that’s the best setting, but I’d see if you have radically different values on each box.

B.
