BusinessObjects Board

XI 3.1 Clustering - architecture question

Hi all,

I’m planning to install a cluster BOE XI 3.1 with 2 nodes.

My questions are rather simple…
Do I have to have 2 cms database (one for each node) ?
Do I have to have 2 filestore (one for each node) ?

What are the port range usually used for the cms nodes?

Thanks for your help!

1 CMS, 1 filestore!

I think the range starts at 6400, read the install guide. Check everything out first, then you won’t have any issues…:).

Hi mark,

first thanks for your reply

Ok for 1 CMS database.

For the filestore, if I have only one filestore, I have to change the filestore parameters in the cmc after installing business objects? That’s right?

For the ports, I read this post:

and I decided this configuration:
Node 1:
CMS -> 6400
SIA -> 6410
Node 2:
CMS -> 6401
SIA -> 6411

No problem.

I should have been clearer one CMS DB and one filestore.

I just find that people generally have trouble with installs if they don’t do a check list first!

I do this myself, becuase I don’t do them every day.

Generally, if you do this and all your components are up to PAR  then you won’t have issues.

Correct!

oki!
This is not my first installation of BOE but my first on a cluster environement, and I want to be sure of all the elements before pressing the “enter” key
I totally agree with you, a check list prevent from installation problems!!!

thanks for your hep!

For the 1st Server:

Do a full install. Do not change the port number. Know the ODBC that is pointing to the system and audit db.

For the 2nd Server:

During installation, it will ask you if the CMS exist. Answer ‘Yes’. It will ask for the location of system and audit db. Have the exact same OBDC as in the 1st server. Once you point it to the DBs, it will ask for the administrator’s password that you set during the 1st installation. You will have a CLUSTERED installation.

The Input and Output FRS settings should be set to a common UNC path (usually on a SAN).

Hi all,

I launched my installation process yesterday, but unfortunatly, it failed at the end with an error…
so now, I have one node that is functional, but the second one is ko :frowning:
On the second node, my web appications are note available at all, and when I connect to CMC of the firs node, when I check the server section, I can see that my BO2.Cms isn’t started and I can’t start it.
Then if y check the properties of this server, an error message appears saying that “The SIA for this server is not available”…

What would you do in this kind of situation???
What do you suggest to me?

Thanks for your inputs!

Regards

Cedric, you did this step when installing the second machine? Did you reboot after the installs?

Do you have the DSNs on both servers?

Mak 1 :uk: (BOB member since 2005-01-06)

yes on both questions.
I did reboot and I have a dns.
The steps provided in the previous post were used when installing the second machine :hb:

What was the error message you recieved?

Can you see the cluster in the CMC?
Do the data sources test successfully on both machines?

Mak 1 :uk: (BOB member since 2005-01-06)

There were no error message… Just a log of 13Mb (I can’t post it here…)
I can see the cluster in the cmc!
And I can see that my bo2 node is part of my cluster
What is see is :

Nom du CMS : bo1.CentralManagementServer (BO1.network:6400)
Nom du cluster : @BO1.network:6400
Membres du cluster : BO2.cms (bo2.network:6401)
bo1.CentralManagementServer (BO1.network:6400)

The data sources test were successfull on both environments.

thanks for your help!!

Cedrick,

Its difficult to troubleshoot without being there, myself…:).

Have a look at this, it may help:-

Yes I know!!!

I contacted bo support but I don’t have answer now…

thanks

Cedric,

Are you on Windows or Linux ?
If you are on Windows I would suggest to take a look in the Event Viewer where very often you can find the reason why a CMS doesn’t want to start.

I’m on Linux Red Hat 5.4… so unfortunately no event viewer.

Hi all,
I contacted bo support and the situation was really strange.
During my installation of the second node, a “ghost” sia was created, there were no war files, so the webapp couldn’t be deployed.
We have to recreate a new SIA, generate the war file and redeploy it.

After that, almost verything is working. (almost cause I have a Deskiprocessing server that is not starting…)

Now my 2 nodes are connected!!

Thanks for your inputs

Hi,
Just want to ask for opinions and suggestions:
I have my CMS and Input/Output FRS in NY location and also i have job servers in this location too. I also have job servers in London. the reason for this is that i have reports that the reporting data is in london so to make it in close proximity of the reporting db

The thing is, my FRS are in NY location. my question is:
is it useless to have a job server dedicated for london reports as my FRS are in NY??? and better off just run the reports in NY (even though reporting data is from a london server?

i tested a london report - i ran it using a london job server and at the same time running it using a NY job server. seems like it runs faster using the NY JS but i can also see some instances where it is faster running out of LN JS.

thanks
