v4.x stability

Hardworking folks,

Anyone ever done analysis on the v4.x family of BO. If so which version do you find to be the most stable?

Thanks
Stephen

Stephen,

It is really a matter of preference. Depending on what kind of reports your business requires you to run, different version will work fine. Obviously the higher the version the more bugs have been fixed. I have worked with 3.1 to 5.0.2, in the 4.x.x version 4.1.3 and 4.1.5 were pretty stable.

We are currently on 4.1.3 including the Document Agent.

We installed B.O. on the network and besides the DocAgent not responding once in a while the only other problem was a corrupt security file which had little impact on the user community and which was easily fixed.

I took a look at the 5.x product which has some bug fixes but introduces tons more anomalies. Right now I would recommend the 4.1.3 version which is pretty clean and wait for 5.1 or 5.2. Note: The new version of WEBI looks promising.

good luck.

This is not completely true
I have found that 4.1.3 is more stable than 4.1.7 in my environment Infact 4.1.7 is date phobic for me…

Did you ever get a Dr Watson Nt dump?

Thanks

I use 4.1.3 on my laptop. We installed 4.1.7 on the workstations in our training room and experienced several “interesting” enhancements during the training session.

When I have time, we will probably go back to 4.1.3 as long as we continue providing v4 classes.

For version 5 we are currently running 5.0.1.

The big issue for 4.1.3 was potential corruption of the security files during the login process. For individual workstations with local (ie non-shared) files, this is really not an issue. The primary concern was with DAS, where multiple reports can kick off at the same time (resulting in contention and then corruption of the LSI/SSI files). I have clients running 4.1.3 for users and 4.1.5 for their DAS systems for that reason.

I don’t recall other issues with 4.1.4 (or higher) that I can mention specifically. But 4.1.3 seems to be the “best” of the 4.1 products. My opinion, your mileage may vary depending on hardware, OS, and so on.

Hmmm, for the international members of the list, should it be “your kilometer-age may vary”?

4.1.6

We have had some significant problems with 4.1.7 using DB2, particularly with the Document Agent Server.
