Is there a trade off for number of report variables created.

I have a running report, in which there are 8 data providers, I created many report variables to do basic calculations like summing , division and all, but the amount of datahandled is large. I can integrate the data providers so that only 4 would do the same job and am planning on cutting down the number of variables( make a complex formula instead of spanning it across 7/8 of them).

My question is, is it worth doing it, would it considerbly decrease my report run time and do teh calculations quickly or is it something I should go ahead and try as it might depend on the the way universe is organised.
