Has anyone come across a problem when you get a dialog box that says “The printer cannot be found” when you open a report and click File - Print?
I can print the entire report via the toolbar button, but not the menu.
It appears to only happen on PCs where the report was not developed.
It appears to be related to the default printer. I can work around the problem by changing the default printer after the report is open. It will work to any printer beside the default.
I have been dealing with this version 5.0 problem since last September. The report seems to save the printer name from the computer it was saved from. The printer name is only stored with the first report tab in a document and not any of the others. So when people try to open up the reports from the network and they do not have the same printer name on their machine, they receive the error message. Trying to print from any of the other tabs properly displays the users computer’s installed printers. Like you mentioned, a workaround is to print via the toolbar button or rename your default printer to the name of the developer’s default printer.
Tech Support has logged bug #38340 for the issue. It is scheduled to be fixed in 5.0/2.5 Windows SP3.
I think that we’ve found a workaround for the problem noted below.
You have to create a printer named exactly the same as the default printer of the developer who created the report. If the default printer was named RandysPrinter that pointed to \server\printer, then everyone who opens the report needs to have a printer named RandysPrinter. The default printer name is stored inside the REP file itself. If that printer does not exist, named exactly the same, you will get this error when you click Print on the File menu.
Tech Support is working a fix to this bug, but in the mean time this may help some…
