Testing new universes before export

We’re running BO 4.1.3 to a MSSQL 6.5 database.

One of our universe designers is making changes to an existing universe.
She has imported the universe from one of our universe domains, made
changes to that universe, and saved the changes on her local machine.
Before exporting those changes to the repository, she’d like to test the
new universe to make sure it does what she wants.

If she launches Reporter and uses the new report wizard, she can’t see the
universe that she’s modified and saved locally. The only universes that
appear as valid universes for her to choose are the ones that have already
been exported.

How can we write or run a report using the copy of the universe on her
local machine without having to first export it to the repository? This
shouldn’t be a difficult task, but I can’t find a way to do it.

Our directory structure is as follows:

C:\Program Files\BusinessObjects\Universe
C:\Program Files\BusinessObjects\Universe\Universe
C:\Program Files\BusinessObjects\Universe\Quality_Universe
C:\Program Files\BusinessObjects\Universe\Development_Universe

BusinessObjects tech support suggested moving the modified universe from
one of the directories associated with a domain to the C:\Program
Files\BusinessObjects\Universe directory – but that didn’t help.

Any ideas?

David,
As long as your designer has not changed the name of the universe, she
should have no problem testing her changes. When the report wizard asks
which universe, select the name of the one she has modified (it will be in
the list if it had previously been exported). It should automatically look
in the local universe folder. I do this all the time; even making changes
to the universe with Designer open, then flip back to Reporter to see if it
is correct. I hope this answers your question.

I knew that this had to be something simple, but I think I know where the
confusion comes from.

She was looking at the Universe Help (the description that can be modified
through the universe properties) to make sure she was testing the latest
universe. The universe help being displayed was always based off of the
universe in the repository, and not the help that had been modified in the
copy of the universe on her local machine.

You almost need to take on faith that though it looks like you’ve selected
the universe from the repository, you’re actually running the local
version. Nothing Business Objects does makes that clear. I suggested that
she just be sure that BusinessObjects doesn’t start importing a universe to
overwrite her modified version.

Thanks,

David

There’s no need to “take it on faith” to verify the version you’ve selected.
In Designer, go to File -> Parameters and add a comment to the description
area. This description displays in BusinessObjects New Report wizard’s
Select A Universe dialog under the list of available universes.

The comment can be as terse as today’s date.

That’s what started this whole mess. The comments you add to the locally saved
copy don’t show up. The comments that appear are the comments associated with
the one that’s already been exported to the repository.

I have had similar problems especially when you have a universe in the same
name in several sub-directories (for several reasons…like say for
comparing 2 version of the universe etc). BO does not exactly tell which
one of the version you are working with. The same extends to LOVs (that’s
another story)…

Hi ,
I guess there is a much simpler way to get out of all these mess. A
Universe can be locally viewed as well as when it is in the repository. (
having the same names).
Opening the BO user module via the designer will solve the problem.
Open the copy of your Universe in the Designer Module. When you open
the Designer module, check the box for ( work in offline mode). This will let
you work on the universes in your local machine.
Tools → Run → Business Objects (this open up the user module)

Another method is to open the user module in offline mode. Then the

BO will look for Universes in the local machine only.
Hope this helps.
Thx.,

This question has come up very often on the list server and answers seem to be
a bit different each time. We are about to put our first universe into
production so I also had this question.

Therefore, I have just completed an eight page white paper on this topic. I
would be glad to share this but, it is too long for the list server. Does
anyone have a site where this could be stored for those who what to access it?
