sorting on measure in query panel

Hi

I have a dataprovider with x number of dimensions and 1 measure object. When I place a sort on a measure and then run from the query panel I see that the raw data from within the data manager is sorted however when I place the objects in a table they are not sorted in the same fashion. I realize that you can sort from within the report itself but what is the point of sorting at the query panel then…its should also reduce the computing time by conducting the sort at the db rather than from within the report itself. Any ideas??

There is little point to sorting in the query panel. It’s really only useful when you plan to export the data.

The computing time in the report for a sort should not be significant. It may even take longer to perform the sort at the database level.

Hey thanks for the quick reply I will run with this. I wasn’t totally sold on the sorting from within the QP but our client came up with the question and I couldn’t give a solid answer.

In a really old version of BusinessObjects, the report by default used the sort order of the query panel. Since 4.x, I believe, the sort order of the query panel simply defined how the data was returned in the “View Data” panel, and as Andreas said, is only obvious if you export the raw data.

Since then, the report defaults to “sorting” the data based on the columns displayed – and preferably, has true sorts defined on the data block by the report developer.
