I have a universe named ‘Provider’, in which I have made changes to a few of the object data types. After saving the universe, I try to export it to the repository, but get the error message “The universe name (Provider) already exists in the universe domain. Change the universe name to export it.” What is happening here, why can’t I just overwrite the existing universe? Thanks for your help…
This error means that you don’t have the privileges to over write the existing universe. You can change your privileges via supervisor mode and then try to export.
You probably are not GENERAL SUPERVISOR…so have the universe to be exported open on designer (saved locally)…and delete the existing universe from supervisor module and try refreshing it. It would work. You might just be a SUPERVISOR (not general supervisor) so don’t have override permissions on universes.

heh, despite the obvious puns from the topic you might also want to try the following. If you do have sufficient rights check to see if you have any other universes that are named differently but have the save universe name. For example :
Universe A is called mytestuniv1.unv which contains a universe called testing Universe B is called mytestuniv2.unv which contains a universe called testing
I ran into this once and had the same problem you are describing if you do have sufficient rights.

Guess what: if you ever did a “Save As…” on the universe, then you have two universes with the same name. When you do a Save As operation Designer resets the universe ID. Then when you try to export, it finds another universe with a different ID but the same name. That’s the most typical reason that I encounter this error.
Best advice: don’t use the “Save As” feature in Designer. It just confuses the issue. Use Windows Explorer or (shudder) a DOS window to make a back up copy of the universe instead.
That isn’t a solution, but may be an explanation for the problem. As for a solution, you can a) delete the current universe from the repository and then export your version, or b) set up to allow the existing universe to be overwritten.
