Save Webi Reports as Excel too large

I dont understand why when I save a Webi report as excel it is so large even though there is not that many rows. For example a webi report with 3135 rows saved as excel is 1216 KB.

There is nothing fancy in the report there is no formulas it is just a table listing there is only:

  • one tab/sheet
  • 24 columns
  • 1 prompt

If we add a section to the report it comes more than twice as large

webi preferences for saving excel is set to: Prioritize easy data processing in Excel. Changing to the other preference 'Prioritize the formatting of the documents ’ doesnt make much difference in size.

is there anyway to reduce the size when saving to excel or is this just how BO acts. I have search this forum could not resolve my issue. Instead of using free-standing cells for the heading and page numbers I used horizontal tables didnt make a difference.

Do you have any images in your report? Keep in mind that even lines and boxes (though not cell borders) count as images. That can run up the size pretty quickly.

Have you tried copying the values out of this workbook and into a new workbook, without the formatting? That should give you a baseline on how much space just the data is taking up.

Odds are strong that there is some particular element in your report that is causing the bloat. And it is not necessarily BOXI’s fault. I’ve seen Office applications do this with converted documents from several applications. Some particular choice like a background color can cause Office to jump through all kinds of hoops trying to be “helpful” in preserving what it thinks you want.

I’d just try playing around with different parts of the report, exporting it to Excel after each change. It may take a while, and it may not actually get you anywhere. But, you might discover the weird setting that is causing the bloat.

Solved: I recreated the report from scratch and the webi report size when saved as excel was much less
