Can we create a user as member of different groups? Like, if i have different user groups as Sales, Finance, HR etc., can i create a user called “Analyst” in more than 1 group. when i tried this, got a message saying “name is already used. please select a different name”.
If it is possibly to do so, how does BO identify which user(having the same name) is logged in?

You dont have to create the user in all the groups.
Create it once and go to User properties-> Groups & Profiles tab and add whichever group you want to associate to this user

I think you’re asking whether you can have multiple userid with the same name, just based in different groups. The answer is no to that question. A userid is the same userid, no matter which group(s) it is in.
You can put one user in multiple groups.
Here is an entry from the Supervisor FAQ that summarizes how BusinessObjects grants rights when a user is in multiple groups.
