Hi all! Has anyone used the print to file option of Designer? We want to use it in creating documentation of the universes for users, however it creates a .PRN file which is not readable with anything I’ve tried. Any help here?

The .PRN file can be read with Adobe Acrobat Exchange. Exchange can convert it to a .PDF file that can be read by the freeware Acrobat Reader or the plug-in to Netscape or Explorer. I have used this method in the past to distribute electronic versions of our universe documentation. You just need to find someone who has Exchange to convert it for you.
This got to be a little bit of a hassle. So, I purchased Adobe Acrobat for my PC. Now, I can print the universe documentation directly to a .PDF file from Designer and distribute it. This works very well for the users since they can do searches inside of the .PDF file with Acrobat Reader.

Correction - I should have said Acrobat Distiller instead of Acrobat Exchange. Distiller does the conversion from .PRN to .PDF. Also, I think this will only work if you click on the “print to file” option in the print dialog of a postscript printer.

We have Acrobat Exchange and I cannot open my universe .prn file. I get the error that the file does not begin with “%pdf”

Hi Mike,
I’ve tried this method before and had some decent luck. I had to set up a postscript printer as printing to a file. Postscript is just text commands anyway (no char codes). I then wrote a little program to strip out the unwanted stuff and format the document. However, there are better ways.
Are you familiar with the “MANAGER0” universe? There is a universe that actually looks at your repository tables. You create reports from it just like with your own BO universes. If you do a search on this list archives, you will see many postings on it. Use “Manager0” (manager zero) as the keyword to search for.

Hi Mike:
The Adobe distiller is an excellent approach. We use it to convert our CBT documentation from word to adobe. If I recall, (I havn’t done it for a while) from word you might actually be able to print directly to the distiller which will create the PDF file for you. I will try to see if the distiller is an available printer when I print from BO. I’ll let you know how I make out.

Minor point… that should be Manager - Oh, where the “O” formerly stood for Oracle. In the “good old days” of BusObj 3.1 (sometimes I long for the simple repository structure!) there were:
ManagerS (Sybase)
ManagerO (Oracle)
ManagerX (Informix)
and so on. The only one that made the jump to 4.x was the Oracle version, and it is not (as many people have previously pointed out) very generic.

In case it hasn’t been suggested yet, use the ManagerO universe to create documentation for your users, not the Print to File feature.
