Populting default values at the start of report

I am trying to get default values like 0, NULL, etc populated in the prompts just at the start of report before the user makes any changes. I am using 5.1 version.
I heard it can be done using macros. But I am new to BO and not familiar with Macros itself.
Please help me in this regard. Step by step will be very useful.
