We have 2 universes that are basically identical except that they are used by different users and a lot of the objects are different (possibly also different naming for the same object - not sure about that yet).
Do I need to keep 2 different universes or can I have only one and somehow restrict access to certain objects ?

Hi,
You can set in universe overrides which objects or classes of objects are hidden to a user or a group of users.
This is done in Supervisor in BO 6.5 and below and in BO XI it’s done in Designer.
