Multiple Section Reports - sort limitation?

I sometimes use Business Objects to extract data from an Oracle database and save the resulting report as a text file in the form of a macro, which is run in a GIS application to display the data on a map. The macro creates classes and objects in the GIS application and displays them as dots or icons on the map with a number of fields of data attached to each. To do this the macro has to be in the form of a list of individual GIS objects, each with its associated data in field order. I can achieve this quite happily using a master/detail report with each of the required data fields as separate BO objects, sorted in ascending order in the ‘master’ part of the query panel and the last data field as a BO object in the ‘detail’ section. The other parts of the macro are common to every report and are simply entered as text in cells in the appropriate part of the report.

This method works well as long as the number of data fields required does not exceed 10. I find that I can enter a maximum of 9 BO objects, sorted in ascending order from 1 to 9, in the master part of the query panel then the sort icon reverts to zero. Any subsequent objects cannot be sorted in order and consequently appear together in the wrong place in the report. Is this a limitation of Business Objects or a limitation of my ability? Can anyone help?

There appears to be a limitation of 9 Master / Detail settings, and another limit of 9 break levels. However, there is no limit on the number of sorts that can be applied. Have you tried using basic sorting instead of the Master Detail settings?

Using the Master/Detail settings gives me all the data I need for each GIS object, in a separate section for each one, listed vertically in the report. If I use basic sorting, I can only display the data horizontally in a table. If I try to arrange the fields vertically in the report structure by dragging and dropping, the report becomes a Master/Detail one…! It doesn’t seem to be possible to sort vertically - unless I’m missing something?
