Migrate to new server

Would someone please share the steps involved with moving the
BusinessObjects repository (security, document and universe domains) to
another server? Using 4.1, Oracle 7.3. I’ve never (yet!) needed to recreate
the BOMAIN.key or run a safe recovery. We have about 40+ universes - will
each of these have to be individually re-exported to the new server? Thanks
in advance!

We found this to be a VERY PAINFUL experience, but here is what we had to do:

  1. Import all Universes from current repos. to a network server or your hard drive.
  2. Retrieve all Reports from current repos. to a network server or your hard drive.
  3. Create new database on New Server and Create new BOMAIN.key.
  4. Sign on as General Supervisor to NEW repos. and Create from scratch
    a. Domains
    b. Connections
    c. Groups/Users (and Security)
  5. Export your Universes that you saved in step 1 to the new repos.
  6. Also need to Import Universes again (from NEW repos) for running reports.
  7. Refresh reports that you saved in step 2 and send these to the NEW repos.
  8. Retrieve reports from step 7 and re-run to make sure they work!
  9. If you use DAS, also send reports to DAS and make sure they run in DAS.

We wish you well.

We moved our BO4.1.2 repository (ORACLE 7.3) from one server to another. The
task would have been not so painful if we would have known that there is a
bug in the version 4.1.2 which prevents you from changing the database
connection inside the Supervisor to the new database instance for the
security and universe domain. So I strongly advise to upgrade to BO4.1.4
before moving the repository!
What we did is the following:

  • we created a new repository on the new database (from scratch) and created
    a new BOMAIN.KEY.
  • afterwards we exported the ORACLE-user which owns all BO repository tables
and imported the user into the new database.
  • if you use BO4.1.4 then you simply start the SUPERVISOR and change in the
“Tools”–>“Repository” window the connections to the domains.

In case you are still using BO4.1.2 and you are not able to upgrade before
you are moving the repository you can contact me directly and I can give you
advise how to get around the bug in BO4.1.2 (however it’s a tricky and risky
task).

To all interested: if you use ORACLE database, there is a way to move all your
repositories to any other machines as long as you do not change the middleware
connection name. This is supported by oracle and a customer of ours already did this a
few times.

It involves the following steps:

  1. disable logins to database and move all tables to other database (probably on
    different machine)
    2. let your connection name point to the new machine.

The only thing you need in this case is a centralized connection management.

That’s it.
No re-reation of BOmain keys, or whatever…

hope this helps.
Walter.

I have the same problem of Kathy.

  1. Retrieve all Reports from current repos to a network server on your hard drive.

For this operation, I have to save all Reports like Personal Documents. It’s correct?

And after, in the new server, I have to open every report and save it in Corporate Documents.

Does exist a folder where there are all reports created in Corporate Documents?

Thanks.

Dear adridabbi, if you’ll notice, this topic is over 7 years old – it’s probably for version 3.x or 4.x of BusinessObjects. You don’t even say which version of BusinessObjects you are using, the process might be quite different.

Thanks for your replay.

I solved my problem. I’m using Bus Objects 6.5.1. I made the correct connection to repository and now I can see all reports created.
