Microsoft Terminal Server

I’m gathering some information regarding Microsoft Terminal Server. Are any on you on the LISTSERV successfully using MTS with Business Objects 4.1? Any gotchas that you ran into or would warn against?

Thanks in advance for the input.

Here is some info from our Network Manager. Yes, we are currently running Business Objects 4.1.3 on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition.

Current Hardware Config:
Compaq Proliant 5500R-400mhz Dual Xeon w/1gb of Memory.

A few lessons learned:

  1. Microsoft’s suggestions for configuration are sorely mis-calculated. Double whatever their estimates are for the hardware config and the number of users per box. With our current config, we can support up to 30 users per terminal server. Successfully running three applications (Business Objects, Sewn2000, and Groupwise). It really is quite efficient for remote access.

  2. Set your virtual memory (Hard disk Swap file) to at least three times the physical memory as a minimum. If it is any smaller, once you fill up with PID sessions, the terminal server comes to a grinding halt.

  3. You will have no local drive access or local printer access when logged into terminal server unless you use the thin client from Citrix. “MetaFrame”. However, this product is VERY cost prohibitive.

Don’t ignore the instruction regarding method for application install. Regardless of manufacturers instructions, use the Add/Remove Programs control panel for all application installs on the terminal server.

Hope this helps!

One additional note:
If you are using fast ethernet and want to use Compaq’s newest dual-port 10/100 Nic, the NDISFIXI.exe does not work. You have to run this hot fix when applying the load balancing features of the dual port card. However, when you apply it to a terminal server, the hot fix comes back with the message; “The hot fix you are attempting to apply is newer than the operating system.” And the hot fix exits. Compaq says Microsoft has to provide the fix for it. I suspect it might be available in the NT 4.0 SP4. But I’m not touching SP4 for a few months…think I’ll let someone else be the beta.
