Is there any outline or PPT on what may be a normal picture of an XI installation showing front-end, server-side and database connectivity.
Looking for picture view of optimal or best practice for tiering an installation for BO. Any help or sample to start off with would be great.

Every installation and deployment guide should have what you are looking for. BO product guides can be downloaded from here:

So find an installation and/or deployment guide for a BO version and OS that you use.
