linking data

X-cc: “Davis, Vicki L.” VICKI.L.DAVIS@usa.conoco.com

I know I must be missing somthing obvious, but here it is. I am bringing back an object called Meter Number Tat from a database in a query. There are 367 rows. I then insert another table and open an Excel spreadsheet and Read in Meter No# from that source. There are 3682 rows. I link Meter Number Tat and Meter No# together. They are both character and dimensions.

This is so bizarre but after the link the values of Meter Number Tat and Meter No# are IDENTICAL in the same table. It appears that when there is NO value in Meter Number Tat matching Meter No# that Meter Number Tat takes on the value of Meter No# !

If I build a table with Meter Number Tat, it has 367 values. I can Insert a table right next to it with Meter No# and it has 3682 values. So far so good. However if I put them into the same table, Meter Number Tat grows to 3682 values and the two columns are IDENTICAL.

Help!!!

Greg,

Have a look in the archives (around beg of Aug) and David Rathbun’s reply to my posting about this entitled ‘Outer joins in synchronised data providers’. David gave a very thorough explanation of why this happens.

David, you must owe me a beer now for ‘praising’ you!!
