I'm trying to install BusinessObjects 4.1 on someone's machine, and it
ALMOST finishes, but it crashes with an illegal operation error when
the status bar reads "Creating the ODBC Data Source". The exact error
is _SU caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at
0137:bff9a28c.
I've installed this about 100 times and never run into this error.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong?

Angela,
I encountered the same problem, which seemed to be caused by the presence of
certain Oracle ODBC drivers already existing on the machine. Since we
connect through SQL*Net, I de-selected the install of the ODBC drivers on the
custom setup options and the install worked fine. Note that this also meant
not installing the demo toolkit, which wasn’t an issue in my case.

This is just a shot in the dark but…
Make sure that you are not installing the DEMO database that comes with
4.1.
When it installs the DEMO it attempts to create a new ODBC data source.
I think
that this is what is causing 4.1 to error out. Hope this helps!
I remember having similar problems while doing a lot
of installs of 4.0.5.5/6a. The reason then was that the
persons had Lotus products installed on their machine
and didn’t have Microsofts ODBC driver. So I
unchecked that box and reinstalled without error.
If your users are not going to be interfacing with any
local database and just with a server database, like
Oracle, you shouldn’t need to install the driver.
Hope this is of some use.

Try to first install the Microsoft ODBC package which comes on the CD, I
think, the PC where the error occured has some other (versions?) of ODBC
drivers installed.
After that the install should work…
at last in most cases I encountered, this was the problem.

Unfortunately the ODBC install package, at least for
4.0, checked to see if a Mircosoft product exists
(Word, Excel, Access, etc. [Win95 didn’t qualify])
before it would install it. If it found no Microsoft
product, and in this case it was Lotus products, it
wouldn’t allow me to install the drivers. So I just
disabled the ODBC driver to lessen the aggravations for
the next poor soul(s) who got stuck doing all of the
installs.
