Elaine, we ran into this as well. This is a documented problem in the Knowledge Base Solutions at the BusinessObjects TechSupport (at <www.techsupport.businessobjects.com>), Resolution Entry 150:
Resolution Entry 150
Resolution Type P/R entry
Product Release Setup 4.1
Problem
_su caused an invalid page fault in kernel32.dll – error during setup causes installation to fail during ODBC datasource creation.
Resolution
****SYMPTOMS
This error occurs when the setup program tries to create the ODBC
datasources for the demokit set of universes and reports.
CAUSE****
There is a problem with system dll files or the ODBC drivers.
****RESOLUTION
If you do not plan on using the demonstration kit, you do not need
to install the generic ODBC drivers and the demokit from the Modules screen of the BusinessObjects Setup dialog box.
There are several resolutions to try:
A.
- Backup your current msvcrt40.dll and mfc40.dll files. 2. Un-install BusinessObjects.
- Re-install BusinessObjects. Overwrite these two DLL files using
the ‘Replace newer DLLs with older.’
You can also try copying the two dll files : msvcrt40.dll and
mfc40.dll from another machine to the machine that you have the
problem on, as one or the other dll files may be corrupted.
B.
- Re-install ODBC from the BusinessObjects CD. The setup program for this is located at Microsoft\DataAcc\ (version 3.0 and
higher) or Microsoft\ODBC25\ (version 2.5 ** install the patch first -
see resolution D) - Un-install and re-install BusinessObjects.
C. Re-install MS Access (the database for the demo kit).
D. This problem can also be caused by a problem that occurs with
the first release of ODBC 3.0. To check which release you have
installed:
- Go to Windows\System
- Right-click on the file ODBC32.dll and select Properties >
Version tab. - If the release reads 3.0.1 or lower, apply the patch delivered on
the BusinessObjects CD: Microsoft\Dataacc\Sp1\odbcmin.exe

I am receiving a GPF when I am loading BO 4.1.4 on a certain win95 laptop, the install is crashing with a windows error that reads "_SU caused an invalid page fault in Module KERNEL32.DLL at 015f:bf99bfd. It is consistently blowing at the same point every time, usually while loading some ODBC files. I’ve previously loaded 4.1.4 on the same type of machine with no issues. This is the only machine that has had a problem like this. I’ve tried the following, but that didn’t work.
– right-click on My Computer. Go to the performance tab. Press the Graphics
button. Change Hardware acceleration to None. Reboot and try the install
again. –
