Good-Bye DESKI and Good-Bye SAP BO

Same frustrations with a functionally poorer and more buggy reporting tool than the one that existed 10 years ago! :reallymad:

If you are referring to Microstrategy than I agree; worse piece of archaic crap I have ever worked on that I never included it in my resume. Don’t want to touch that again.

As for Qlickview; never used it but some say it has the same look and feel as DESKI did.

No, I’m referring to Webi!

I know of one large company that is currently migrating off Qlickview on to BO. The times they are a changing…

The thing is big companies don’t understand the right tools for the right job. They probably thought Qlickview was a one stop reporting solution, when really it is really a nice looking visualisation tool.

Sad that they lose all this time and money ignoring what the BI developers said during the time or selection.

But I guess that is why the ā€˜big guys’(CEO, CIO,) get the big bucks… making bad decisions costing time and money.
Then trickle it down to getting that money back by low-balling developer rates and time constraints.
I mean as developers we are not supposed to play golf(especially women) and are; in their eyes ā€˜Cost Center’ right!

Unfortunately BI developers don’t get to do demos at CEO level, grease palms, provide nice lunches…etc.

Went through this earlier this year, they had NO IDEA about the product they are getting rid of.

Not to forget that since the change over to Crystal platform there has been more issues I think then solutions given.

ā€˜DESKI’ was ahead of its time I think. But I can understand that SAP want to go towards Crystal. They said that Crystal was a better backend … HARDLY! You have to expect that from ā€˜Legacy minded’ individuals… old news.

You now how long it took me to get top ranking personnel to use PDF version or reports instead of printing up to 300 pages! ridiculous and actually sad state.

I agree with this as well as similar posts on this thread. Seems that everyone talks and wants to implement Business Intelligence but directions such as the one joealyche mentions especially with CRYSTAL is not BI. Sorry Crystal developers; its just not a tool for BI.

BOETL2012 (BOB member since 2012-08-27)

It is the push for Webi that is the issue, Crystal reports was designed to fill a different reporting requirement than Deski or Webi. Now they are trying to make Webi fill the Deski role.

Exactly, I’ve been trying to explain this to the BO old school for the last 10 years, they are complimentary tools not competitive!

I think Webi just works fine, but for a few issues:

  • parallel query execution, which may come in 2016
  • geo-Charts in Web browser, which may come in 2016
  • slow/unwieldy JAVA Applet…

I do not miss DESKI anymore, I have not used in a looong time

I use DeskI every day (and WebI too). It’s just so much faster.

joepeters :us: (BOB member since 2002-08-29)

Aww come on, you just Need a 4 CPU core @4GHz clockspeed + hyperthreading and 8 GB RAM with -XMX 4g for Java/Webi on your Laptop  8)

Deski, is that not Lumira now?

Seriously, I just say this in favor for Webi 4.1:

  • TimeDim function
  • Data Tracking
  • Bunch of new chart types
  • great access to SAP BEx queries

Andreas :de: (BOB member since 2002-06-20)

8GB? Pff. I have 16, buddy!

joepeters :us: (BOB member since 2002-08-29)

I noticed though, you skipped the question/recommendation about number of CPUs and clock speed

Andreas :de: (BOB member since 2002-06-20)

Plenty

joepeters :us: (BOB member since 2002-08-29)

Joe,

Congratulations on reaching the 5000 mark
And I reiterate - Deski is much, much faster! - and it just works.

None of this configuration nonsense like Java version blah blah blah won’t work with IE version xyz unless it’s a Tuesday and it’s pouring down with rain when you might have a chance as long as you have patch SP1357b installed etc., etc., etc…
