How to start with BO?
- get some BO training (report development, universe development, BO administration)
- get involved in a project where you will need to solve real problems
- ask specific questions in BOB
- read sticky topics that are in almost all subforums in BOB. There are FAQs and some other useful information

If for self learning you are asking, it would be hard for you, as you need proper resources for the same like BO Licnese, but if you are working for some organization, definitely you will learn faster.
Once you start learning or practicing on Business Objects, B 
B is best source for you(Full of Business Objects Masters)
So if you can give more clearer picture, definitely will try to answer you.
