We recently upgraded from 4.0.5.5 to 4.1.3. Some of our users have noticed
that the performance of the export to an external data format function has
decreased signficantly. Reports that could be exported in 15 seconds with
4.0.5.5 are taking 15 minutes to do exactly the same thing with 4.1.3. The
alternative of using the “copy all” function and then pasting that into an
empty spreadsheet has also taken a huge performance hit.
Exporting to the XLS file format takes a loooooong time, yes. I have started
suggesting that users do EXPORT to CSV instead. For a number of reasons.
- An export that takes 15 minutes to XLS will take 30 seconds to CSV.
- CSV is not limited to a particular length (XLS is limited to 16,384 rows,
the number of rows allowed in Excel '95). - CSV is very portable, readable by Excel, Lotus, Access…
- CSV is “registered” to Excel under Windows. Meaning that if you
double-click a file with type CSV you will automatically start Excel.
Once you load the file into Excel, doing a “Save As” to convert the file to a
true “XLS” is very quick.
