EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION C0000005 - unable to open report

To all BO gurus

I get the following error (See below) when I try to open a BO report that I am developping with BO v5.1.3 Reporter. I ended up re creating the report in order to solve but I loss half a day in the process. I am, however, afraid that I might lose another report.

I tried the report on another post (Win2000) and I got the same error.
What gives?

1 processor Pentium Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 10
Windows 2000 Workstation v5.0 build 2195 (Service Pack 2)
Physical Total/Avail: 260.528 Kb / 132.416 Kb
Temp directory C:\Temp\ (1431560 Kb available)
‘Intel810 Video Accelerator’ video card
1024 x 768 with 65536 colors

Unhandled Exception
Code: c0000005
Description: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION

Call stack:

Module at 0x31c50000: C:\Program Files\Business Objects\BusinessObjects 5.0\cube50.dll
etc…

The error seems to be occurring more and more often. I did a search on Google but I didn’t find much.

I was wondering if someone could tell me what my problem is…

TIA
James

Hi

This is what tech support is saying about this

give a shot

WARNING
This resolution involves modifying the registry. Incorrect registry editing can cause unpredictable results. Please ensure that you know how to restore it if a problem occurs.
SYMPTOMS
You receive the error message above while using Designer, Supervisor or BusinessObjects.

CAUSE
A Windows generic error, this message indicates that Business Objects has performed an illegal operation.

RESOLUTION
Apply one of the following resolutions:

  1. Update the clients to the latest BusinessObjects version.

If you already updated, or if installing this version does not solve the issue try the following:
2. Delete the registry key. (See warning)
a. Click Start> Run and type REGEDIT.
b. If Designer crashes, delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Business Objects\BusinessObjects\5.0\design\DESIGNER.
c. If BusinessObjects crashes, delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Softwares\Business Objects\BusinessObjects\5.0\busobj\BusinessObjects

  1. Find and rename the mfc42.dll.
    a. Go to Windows\System file (System32 file for NT) to rename the file.
    b. Reinstall BusinessObjects using the installation program.
    c. Select to install Mfc42.dll version 4.21. This version is supplied on the installation CD for version 5.0.2 and is the most stable DLL.
    d. Verify the Path variable in the Environment tab in the Control panel\System file.
    e. Go to the Control Panel > double click System.
    f. Click Environment tab, then click Path under the System variables list.
    g. You should see \system32 directory at the beginning of the path. If necessary, amend the path variable so that the path points to the Mfc42.dll in the system file.

  2. Launch Designer and recreate the connection to the universe.
    a. Select File menu > Parameters command.
    b. Click Edit.
    c. Click the Advanced tab.
    d. Set the Array fetch size to 50 and Disconnect after each transaction.

  3. Run a safe recovery (see Supervisor’s Guide). Set parameters as above.

What were you doing before the message appeared? Slice and Dice? Creating a variable, etc?

Do it happen on another machine?
