Has anyone taken the 2 day Business Objects Designer class that is currently offered by Business Objects? We are interested in sending people to this class but would like to hear if anyone thought it was useful and worth the 2 day effort it requires. In addition, has anyone found any of the classes currently being offered by Business Objects worth its time and money?
Thanks for responding,

I have taken the class. It is good as in introduction. Our universes are far more complex than the simple ones they use in the class. I personally feel they should have an Advanced Designer class that gets more into contexts and other complexities faced in real world situations.

I couldn’t agree more. The advantage of the course, of every course really, is that you are away of your normal work and are able to concentrate on BO only. The manuals on paper and on the CDROM are quite elaborate.

I have attended the five day course comprising all the classes currently offered by BusinessObjects in the UK (Maidenhead). This included two days on the user module, two days on Designer and a day on Supervisor. Whereas they were useful to some degree as an introduction to the tool they are very simplified and do not address the whole of the product.
I don’t know if this is the same worldwide but in the UK there are no courses (run by BO themselves) on Scripting, OLE and DAS and other areas that are complicated such as large scale installation and deployment and multiple repository setups. I find it hard to believe that there is no requirement for scripting courses.
Comments on particular courses:
Reporter: This is a simple introduction to running reports and building ad-hoc queries from pre-written universes. Useful for end users.
Explorer: This is a more complex reporter course and focuses mainly on drill-down and the slice and dice panel. My personal opinion was that this course went on too long and didn’t hold your interest since much of it was repetitive. Useful for users who will really want to get into drill-down and other OLAP features.
Designer (2 days): This introduced the features of building universes by working with universes containing about 10 tables. I felt that most issues were covered briefly without getting into complex real details at a more technical level due to the fact that the tables and universes used were so simplified and not at all like a real business situation. You will certainly not learn everything you need to know about building and maintaining universes from attending this course.
Supervisor: This was fairly useful for introducing the Supervisor module to set up users but didn’t include anything about installations or working with several repositories. I felt that its use was limited by its content.
I hope these comments are of use to anyone considering the courses. They are worth going on as an introduction but do not assume that you will be an expert afterwards!!
