Broadcast Agent

I was curious if anyone has installed and implemented Broadcast Agent. Any info on the following would be greatly appreciated.

Hardware Requirements
Stability
How many users can it support efficiently Cost

Thanks.

I have a few questions concerning Broadcast Agent. Hopefully, someone can shed some light on these things for me.

Versions: BA 5.0.2, NT 4.0 (SP 5), Oracle 7.3

When Broadcast agent starts, 3 instances of BcsSched.exe start in Oracle. Why does that occur and is there any way to change it? I know how to change the duration of how long they are on, but I don’t understand why 3 start for each BA. We have about 6 BA’s that are about to go online and I need to understand why I have 3 Oracle instances for each.

Also, our database goes down rather consistantly (for maintance/backups). When this occurs, the BcsSched.exe instances are kicked out. Unfortunately, they never get resarted when the database comes back up. Does anyone know how to prevent that?

I appreciate any help you can provide me.

Hello Listers, have any of you ever setup Broadcast Agent and not set the servers up in a cluster. We have several people who are presently running document agent on servers in version 4.1 Now that we are moving to BO 5.0 the same people still want their servers to be dedicated for their use only but use Broadcast Agent. Do any of you know if I can have 6 to 8 Broadcast agents and not link them together without any problems? I plan to link two of the servers as a cluster.

Thanks,

Has anyone had any (or heard of any) issues with BA working on SQL 7. From what I understand it has problems with the 3.5 version of the ODBC.

Documents scheduled to refresh with BCA don’t get refreshed in WEBI.

Lynette,

What version of Webi/BCA are you using? We’re on 2.5.1/5.0.1 and we have a similar problem with one user. If she schedules a report to run through BCA, it runs for a week, then quits. It show that it is running in the Console, but the refreshed report never shows up. BO tells us that upgrading to 2.5.3/5.0.3 will solve the problem. We’re planning on trying that soon.

For a large company, wuld you recommend creating multiple Broadcast Agents, oe for each application area with their individual document domain or just one?
Thank you.

Lucia,
Your question would depend on what type of volume and the requirements of the company. If you have a large number of automated reports that are hitting a single server all day and night I would consider a distributed system. That is a Master BCA server with remote “Nodes” on the same OSAGENT_PORT. This would depend on what type (size and complexity of the queries) are being run from each application area. As I understand it, BCA will do load balancing between its servers. That is if one server is being hit hard on BCA requests, the Scheduler will pole the network on the OSAGENT_PORT Find a BCA node that is has resources available and send the job over to it for processing. Can you give us a little more information on what you need and how you are currently set up?

Hope this helps

don’t mess with sp3. If you are going to spend time testing and finding a stable solution go spend it testing 2.6. I have found this release to be better than any 2.5.x release.

BCA runs without any problems after the upgrade to 2.6

We have not implemented BCA in production. We’ve just finished testing and is preparing an implementation plan. We have multiple groups who are waiting for BCA to go into production. Some groups have tremendous volume of reports. Since you can define multiple BCA in the Supervisor and assign each to their document domain, was wondering if it would be a better practice to define one BCA for each group to segregate their reports and for ease of monitoring.
What’s your opinion? Is there any white paper on best practice on implementing BCA?
Thanks.

Has anyone successfully scheduled in Broadcast Agent v.5.1, a report with multiple data providers and saved as text? Thank you.

I haven’t tried 5.1 yet, but we have report doing that in 5.0.2. What’s the problem you’re having? Do you have a report that worked in 5.0.x but doesn’t in 5.1? Have you tried specifying a local destination for the text file?

Hello Listers,
Do you know if there is a way to tell Broadcast agent to only process jobs between 5:00 AM and 11:30 PM?
Thanks

You have to shut down BCA using some other method. As far as I know there is no method built in to the program to do this.

Hello!,

I am trying to send a report to the broadcast agent and schedule it to run. No reports have run successfully. Could anyone help me with this issue?

Can you give us any more specifics? ie - any error messages? In general it can be helpful to run a compact/repair on your repository if BCA isnt giving you any error messages.

Check your server. Sounds like you have a BCA defined, but the scheduler is not currently monitoring the queue.

You can set a time frame for use for a GROUP - maybe you can trick that up… eg, have your users in a Group with a timestamp, set to a particular domain (that your BCA monitors)… then, you can only publish when you have access to that Group, the BCA…

i dont know if having different time restrictions will work tho, but it’s a shot… if you want to keep your users out of the system entirely, this will definitely work…

good luck!

I have a question, I have submitted a report to refresh using Broadcast Agent, but the job is failing with this message:

(303) Error with no ErrorHandler with BreakOnVBAError=FALSE

This report does have a macro in it, but has run successfully in the past and hasn’t had any changes. Has anyone ever seen something like this?

Thanks!
