BO Connectivity Question

We have a large user base (800+) and are concerned about the best way to set the universe connections. I have suggested that the connection parameters be set to remain active for 10 minutes (to avoid the overhead of continually connecting and disconnecting). The dba has asked me what happens to those connections if the server or network go down. Will BusinessObjects maintain those connections (even though they are invalid) or will it recognize that the connections have been broken and try to establish new ones when the server comes back up?

Hi Mike,

From what I observed, if you establish a connection to remain active for 10
min or continually and the system goes down, you will not automatically get reconnected. If you disconnect each time, then you will reconnect.

Mike,

I’ve experienced the following:
When the server goes down (or the oracle proces thats doing the query gets killed by a DBA) you get the “end of file on communication channel”. Depending on your connection settings when the server comes up (or immediately after if it was just your proces being killed), you can reconnect immediately if the setting is reconnect every time, but have to wait a while if your connection is expected to be open by BO (until it was due to be closed and you didn’t do anything in that time with the server). If you go as far as keeping it open for 10 minutes, the user is faster by exiting BO and restarting, then BO will reconnect normally.
