Question: I have two servers to act as a DAS. Both are running DAS as a NT-Service. Will the backup DAS automagically take over whenever the primary ‘dies’?
On the secondary DAS (the one you start in console mode), click on Console, then Options and select the Console Mode tab. Select the “authorise this application to become Primary Document Agent Server”. If the first DAS dies, then this one will become the primary DAS. You can change the frequency at which it checks to see if the primary DAS is working, and also get it to notify you when it becomes the primary DAS.

It depends on how you have configured the “second” DAS. You have to remember that the secondary server DOES NOT become primary UNLESS you configure it to. If you go into the OPTIONS for the secondary server, you have to choose the option for it to “become primary”. This OPTION really helps me a lot (one of BO’s + points), as I do not want my secondary DAS to become primary, as my secondary DAS is just a workstation and used only for monitoring purposes.
However, if you DO decide you want it to become primary and set it so, it will become primary in 30 minutes.
NOW I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU HANS:
How did you configure 2 of the DAS to be running as “service”. I am having trouble as I always see only one of them start as a service and the other just “hangs”.
Configuration: BO v4.1.3, CSP 22. Going against SYBASE - DAS configured on NT SERVER.
Thanks,
-Sai

Yes, the secondary DAS becomes primary when the original DAS is stopped by manually exiting it. The secondary DAS will not become primary for at least 30 minutes if the original DAS fails or the original DAS is rebooted. Also, the secondary DAS must be authorized to become primary. (Under Options, Console Mode). See pages 13-14 in the DAS Admin Guide for BO 4.1.

Of course the alledge “backup” DAS service is not started at all. When started it tries to show the dialogbox that it will act as a console because it finds a DAS online already. As nobody is able to click the ok button it probably is never started! And that’s also way it will not “take over” when the primary DAD failes.
QED: it is not possible to run a backup DAS as a NT Service!
